Trend Alert: Bodysuits for Boudoir Photos

When clients ask me what they should wear for their boudoir shoot, one item that I think doesn't get enough love is bodysuits. But, that's about to change. Bodysuits are so on trend right now and so sexy. And I am here for it! I love recommending bodysuits for boudoir sessions because there really is a bodysuit out there for every body.

What is a bodysuit?

Bodysuits are similar to leotards. They are a one-piece option, like a bathing suit, and they come in a wide range of looks, from barely-there to full coverage. They are sometimes referred to as a teddy.

I think bodysuits are a great choice for your boudoir photos because they give you a seamless, smooth, and put-together look. Hugging every curve, these are contouring pieces that highlight your best features.

Because they are one piece, they create the illusion of a long center line for the body. This gives an elongating and stretching effect. So, no matter a client's shape or figure, bodysuits are flattering on everyone.

Since they are more lingerie-like than functional pieces, some will have snaps, hooks or velcro at the crotch. (Thong styles tend to have the crotch opening further up on the belly for comfort.)

Necklines

Some bodysuits have shoulder straps while others are designed for more coverage. There are some styles that even have long sleeves! The neckline varies depending on the style and may be modest or plunging.

So, basically, you have options.

Materials

Bodysuits come in a wide range of materials, styles, cuts, colors, and prints. What you choose is up to your unique personal style.

There are just so many different styles to choose from when picking out a bodysuit. And the list of materials they use is just as long. You can add drama to your look with lace, pick a sheer look for an implied nude effect, go leatherbound to give your style an edge, and so much more.

How do you style a bodysuit?

The answer is: Any way that you want.

This piece works with just about any kind of outfit you want to create.

Tuck it into a pair of jeans, pair it with a lace-trimmed robe, or just wear it as is. They work on their own or as a layering piece. Since they are both bra and panty, it's easy to create stylish looks without any extra bulk.

There are tons of variations you can take advantage of. It's such a versatile piece of lingerie, that I think everyone should have this piece of clothing in their wardrobe. Wear it for your boudoir session, then reuse it for a sexy date night outfit.

The possibilities are endless with bodysuits.

Where can I purchase a bodysuit?

You can find bodysuits at department stores in the lingerie section, at lingerie stores like Adore Me, or even at Forever 21. There are even more options online to get the perfect cut, color and size for you.

Here are a just a handful of shops with some fire styles you can check out (most of them offer both standard and curvy sizes):

Tips for Sizing and Shopping

You'll want to keep your body type in mind when you start shopping for a bodysuit. While bodysuits ARE universally flattering, there are several different styles out there. Some will be better suited and more flattering to particular silhouettes than others.

Picking the asset you want to show off will help you decide on the best style for you.

For example, if you want to highlight your cleavage, I'd recommend that you opt for a bodysuit with a plunging neckline. Whether you go bra-less or incorporate a plunge bra with it is up to your comfort level.

If you've got legs for days, seek out a bodysuit marketed as high cut — the leg holes will be cut higher up on the thigh, and your legs will look even longer.

Everyone loves a cheeky bum, so don't be afraid to highlight that tush. Look for bodysuits that are cheeky cuts, or even thong styles to really show off that perky peach of a derriere.

Get Measured

Before you buy any lingerie online, go to your local lingerie store and get measured. It will make your purchases much easier and help you feel confident that you are getting clothing that fits.

You can also use this guide to measure yourself at home.

Selecting the right bodysuit for your body is dependent on a couple of factors. I recommend consulting a bodysuit size chart and keeping these two things in mind

Length: Do you have a long torso, average, or is it on the shorter side?

You'll need to have enough fabric lengthwise for the bodysuit to cover you from your shoulders to your crotch so that it doesn't ride up or become baggy. Some bodysuits have extra length built in at the gusset to give more flexibility in the size.

Overall fit: The bodysuit should be form-fitting without any gapping. It should be comfortable and unrestricted and there shouldn't be too much tension from the shoulders to the crotch. If your breasts spill out, it's best to opt for a larger size.

The Best Lingerie for Your Body

Remember, the best lingerie for your body is the one you feel the most comfortable in. Boudoir photos are about confidence and empowerment. And bodysuits do just that.

Because of how much coverage you can get from one, it gives you control over how much you show off and keep hidden. And since bodysuits are so form-fitting and flattering, they are a fantastic way to get comfortable in front of the camera during your boudoir shoot.
